The Cat’n’Fiddle welcomed Elvis tribute act Elvis Sings for a mid-winter jamboree of entertainment, songs and merriment.
Cleverly disguised as Deputy Dawg Elvis made a secret entrance enabling him to set up his equipment incognito.
Suddenly – discarding Trench coat and Russian hat he revealed himself to the audience to rapturous applause.
And what a revelation it was! Clad head to foot by sponsors Spivey's Web of Macclesfield, he certainly looked the part-
Camel haired wig, antique sunglasses, imitation silk shirt in scarlet – it was the full package.
England’s second highest pub had finally met England’s second best tribute act and Stars in Their Eyes regional heat qualifier from 1996. Elvis launched into CC Rider in typical fashion following up with Devil in Disguise (dedicated to Priscilla who was in the audience). A host of popular Elvis numbers followed with a cover of Thunder Road (by Bruce Springsteen) closing out the first set.
The second set started with another dedication to Priscilla (The Wonder of You) who was now becoming nauseated by the performance. To avoid an incident Elvis moved on to Big Boss Man, Guitar Man and His Latest Flame. Cover versions of Crazy Little Thing called Love and Pretty Woman spiced up the proceedings.
By this time the crowd were in a frenzy with the heavy security presence fully utilised to prevent the female contingent from disrupting the performance. Only when he offered to do individual post-performance signing sessions with his female fans (over 60’s first) did the near riot subside.
Further classics followed with the atmospheric “Walking in Memphis” finishing the act - and probably his career.
The crowd wouldn’t let him leave the stage – not because the performance was so good but because they wanted to tear him limb from limb. Elvis is still rumoured to be holed out at the Cat - so why not visit sometime?
Note: This performance went straight to DVD.
